query for strings with parenthases ?

Is there some way to run a query for strings that have parentheses in them
[eg 401(k)] ? For some reason, whenever searches are run with these special
characters the index server/query.idq file returns an 'unspecified error.'

Apparently putting the entire string in quotes solves the problem.
