Discussion:
Fresh 2003 Server doesn't include all files in index.

Hey People,

I'm seeing some wierd inconsistencies in my indexes.

I've got an old Win2000sp4 box with a number of indexes on it. Two of these
have 50+K files and the indexes are around the 3.5-4gig mark (yes, the files
are a lot of large, textual PDF files).

I've copied those same files onto a brand new, fully patched Win2003R2sp2
box, installed the same iFilters (I've tried Adobe's v4, v5 and v6 iFilters)
and the best I've managed is a 730meg index. Searching against the index
shows that most of the files are missing.

Conninued attempts to rescan the folder structure causes the index size to
fluctuate, generally down... Today it's sitting at 6meg!

I put these same files on an older win2003sp2 server (it's been around a
while and patched over the years). It produces the same size indexes as the
original win2000 box.

Someone mentioned a tool for listing all the files in the index. I'm going
to dig that up, but the real question is, why are most of the files being
skipped completely?

Soon'ish

OK, I think I've found the problem.

I had the Acrobat iFilter installed (tried with v4, v5 and v6), but at some
point (I forget when) I also installed Reader v8.1.0 and it looks like this
may have caused some kind of conflict.

It also may have been our anti-virus.. CA eTrust. I had asked our engineers
to put an exlusion on the folders I was indexing, but it looks like they
never did...

It hasn't finished indexing, but given that the index is much bigger than
previous attempts and it's taking much longer, I might be on the right track
with one or both of the points above.

If only the indexer could operate multi-threaded... it could be twice as
fast with a single catalog.

Later'ish

BTW I'm still trying to resolve this.

Every time I run the indexer over the folders/files, I get a different size
catalog and different files have been skipped.

It looks like it's an Adobe iFilter issue (btw Adobe Reader 8.x doesn't
support Index Server, it only supports Windows Desktop Search and WSS/MOSS),
which I'm trying to get Adobe to help me with, but it's very slow going...

If anyone else has seen this, I'm all ears!
