Is there an easier way to exclude the results of all subdirectories, other
than manually using the IS Console to manually "add" folders and tell it
"no" on each and every subdirectory?

In other words, I want to return search results from the root folder only,
and none of it's subfolders.

Don't understand what you're saying there, but I found a way using ASP and
the ixsso.Util object AddScopeToQuery "shallow" "deep" etc.
