Hi Steve,
Some quick update on this issue.
I've confirmed with product group that Indexing Service is basically going
to be a depreciated product and the only things which would be done to it
are critical security fixes. Also as far as I know, there will be no new
features in Server 2008. The roadmap of Microsoft searching technology is:
For indexing on the client side use Windows Desktop Search(WDS); for the
server side use Office SharePoint Server for Search 2007.
If you need more detailed introduction info or have any further questions,
please feel free to let me know. My pleasure to be of help.
Have a great week.
Sincerely,
WenJun Zhang

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting
Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at:
